Wait until you’re head of the secret police … the most secretly surveilled position in the World ¹. You’ll know all about edgy then — watching your back 24x7 in case there’s an uprising and you get strung up from a lampost yourself by an angry mob … or someone who wants your job notices that you let an ill-doer escape (deliberately or not doesn’t matter) and failed in your duty to ensure the moral purity of the human race.

But I can’t think of a better man for the job: you’re a humane man but a moralist nevertheless … just the right sort to make sure there is no recidivism … because the moral brook no excuses …

“Something Vimes had learned as a young guard drifted up from memory. If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you entirely at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you're going to die. So they'll talk. They'll gloat.

They'll watch you squirm. They'll put off the moment of murder like another man will put off a good cigar.

So hope like hell your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word.”

— Terry Pratchett, Men at Arms

… and see no immorality as less significant than any other — wrong is wrong is wrong and that’s all there is to it.

You’ll make a fine head of IntSec; you won’t have a choice … it’s that or swing — and then who’d look after your kids?

¹ Watched like a hawk by everyone just itching to spot the least indication that you aren’t adhering strictly to the law yourself or are otherwise failing in your duties.

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live and too rare to die.
