The Carry On films are very much of their era: cringeworthy today, when you see all the white faces made up to look ‘forrin’ … horribly sexist … class-ridden — I really couldn’t watch them today.

That said, however, I do have a soft spot for Cary On Up The Khyber because it really does ridicule the English/British in a way that only the English/British, as insiders, could … and for Carry On Screaming, because … although it did play to the sexist ‘her indoors’ trope and allowed the hero to be philanderous … it was uncharacteristically free of most of the other above-mentioned nonsense and Harry H. Corbet and Fenella Fielding were excellent in it. Plus there was the immortal classic “Do you mind if I smoke?” gag ….

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live and too rare to die.
