Really?

How about 177 minutes (just three shy of three hours) then? 😉

But I really don’t know where Medium come up with their metrics from — I’ve seen ratings of four-to-seven minutes for stuff that I then read in in around forty seconds to a minute-and-a-half at the outside.

I don’t think it’s a god idea for them to put those figures up there:

  1. They can;t know how long any given reader will need — so the number is a meaningless average that serves no purpose.
  2. Why people who don’t read come to Medium in the first place is beyond me, but they do, so, big numbers will put them off. They’ll know whether they want to read any further once they start … and, f they can’t finish it in one sitting, they can bookmark it, can’t they? It’ just yet another useless feature that Medium have thrown out there because they don’t understand reading, let alone psychology, never mind technology — I have never, in my entire life, come across a site/service more obviously designed/run by people without a clue what they’re doing (the only reason it’s popular is because, like Farcebook, it gained momentum in the early days and now prople come here because people comes here, not because it’s good).

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live and too rare to die.
