Maybe you should read the early Tank Girl comics — don't whatever you do, watch the abomination that was the film though (the only thing even remotely Tank Girl about it was the Hewlett and Martin took the money and ran).
You might find you make more sense to yourself afterwards — I'd've made a great Tank Girl myself, if only I'd been born a girl ¹ (as it is, I had to settle for being Spider Jerusalem).
