Malingering Millennial Malaise
It took me forever to find a decent RSS feed reader.
No, Google’s Reader was not a good one, it was rubbish — if it hadn’t been rubbish, I’d’ve used it, wouldn’t I? Duh!
People only say it was good because they’ve heard/read it was the best and, because they’re ignorant and lazy, don’t bother to think about it but just parrot it back at everyone else.
And, apart from that, why would I want Google to know about everything I read?
That’s right … I wouldn’t.
So, after a long time, trying absolutely everything that wasn’t a stupid choice¹, didn’t require me to register an account with the provider, wasn’t limited to certain syndications but allowed me to add my own feeds, didn’t require me to link out to a browser to read any more than the headlines, displayed images, played videos, was easy on the eye, was decently configurable, didn’t flood my phone with adverts … I found one.
And very happy I was too.
But, it hasn’t been updated in eighteen months and that’s not a good thing: security issues arise and need fixing before it’s too risky to use it any longer — it is, after all, delivering mixed, interactive MIME content.
Unfortunately, the developer lives in a far flung part of Zone 3 that’s difficult to get to, even for those who live there!
As luck would have it, however, I know someone who inhabits the same part of the World and suggested that she might like to go to the developer’s address and explain to him that, if he didn’t update it there and then, she had been given instructions to get unpleasant about it.
And you know what her reason for not doing that was?
That she lives so far away from that address that the only way to be any further from it would to be in a different country.
Well, I’m not being put off that easily: I need this reader to continue working; I don’t want to have to look for another one — not least because I’ve already investigated and all the others are rubbish.
So, I suggested she might like to move there … kill two birds with one stone — well, okay, one bird … but she lives in a Godforsaken part of the World anyway, so, she might as well do me the favour for all the difference it would make to her futile existence.
And you know what half-arsed excuse she came up with this time?
She has an elderly relative to care for!
Really!?
This is my RSS feed reader we’re talking about here, not some here-today/gone-tomorrow elderly family member!
A feed reader, I might add, that, if it hadn’t been free, I’d’ve had to pay for!
What is wrong with people today!?
It’s all self, self, self … and trivia!
