Love Me Again?

Ah … nostalgia …
As I’m in the mood … whilst honourable mentions must go to
- the FKYA remix for making a halfway decent fist of what it was attempting to do — it’s not outstanding, but it’s workmanlike and I’d be prepared to drop it in the right set.
- the Knoir remix for the same reason — it’s more than a little cheesy (reach for the lasers in the club and wave your white gloves/glo-sticks) but, at the right point in the right set, it could be effective.
- the Vijay & Sofia Zlatko, Anas.A and Love Thy Brother remixes for similarly making a decent job of things — not ones that move me personally, but professional enough to appeal to the right kind of crowd and, as a professional, I’d be happy to use either of them for that purpose (versions I’d consider dropping at a party on a terrace or beach, in this instance).
- the Chemical Surf, Ghabe remix in recognition that, after those first (just shy of) three minutes, it probably went on to be one of those ‘massive’ remixes that you only ever hear the DJ play live, never as an official release — you can hear that it’s far from complete and just the introduction to something bigger.
… … the best remix of all is Alastair Pursloe’s Chill Out remix — although it would definitely be a perfect ‘sunrise’ track for a terrace or beach party and I’d be more than happy to drop it for professional purposes … rather than it simply being something I’d drop in a professional capacity, at the right point in the right set, to appeal to the particular public I were booked to play for, I’d play it at an underground event (where, as far as I’m concerned, my reputation is really on the line ² ).
That all being said, however, … notwithstanding the fact that Vice remix (as promoted by the FIFA 22 videogame) is remarkable only for being virtually identical (leaving one to wonder what the point of it is) and could, therefore, serve much the same purpose … after all this time, the original still remains the best version

² Whilst I’m not dismissive of those who go to mainstream events at big name venues, or the big name DJs who play them … professional is professional and I know from experience that it’s possible to both hear and play quality material at them … the cognoscenti gravitate towards the underground. Pick any genre of ‘dance’ music and that’s where it started out: not in the clubs or on the radio, but in the basements, warehouses, condemned industrial buildings and repurposed archways where you’ll find those whose journey there started by word of mouth. It’s where the DJs who go on to become big names start out … and where they play ‘secret’ sets when they’re not performing for the masses at Space, Pacha, Amnesia, etc. The public there is, therefore, accustomed to hearing DJs play material that exhibits exquisite taste, not ‘chart hit’ anthems for the masses … and you have to be at the top of your game to get their approval (which is what your future booking potential depends upon), not simply a name they’ve heard of and have been told they ought to like because that’s what the ‘popular set’ thinks is good.
