It might be an idea to talk to more of them than your grandparents and their contemporaries; a great many of the ‘free love’ advocates weren’t actually as animated by the ‘love and raw emotion’ as they were by the raw, consequence free carnality finally made possible by the invention and, most significantly, ready availability of the contraceptive pill … and aren’t ashamed to admit it either.

Paying lip service to the idea of Love free to express itself physically was a good way to avoid the ‘slut shaming’ that might result from sleeping around but that doesn’t mean that (m)any of those espousing that ‘philosophy’ saw it as any more than a means to an end: that of getting their end away.

Your grandparents and those they mixed with might have been more spiritually minded than others, but that doesn’t make it a common cause for an entire generation, I’m afraid.
