I'm an academic ... reports, citations, references, etc. have been part of my life for over thirty years — although Terry Pratchett also has much to answer for, when it comes to the footnoting ¹.
I read borrowed copies of Preacher in the early '00s and always meant to get it myself ... it's just that I can never justify the cost to myself whenever I get around to thinking about it every once in a blue moon, so I don't (they really are very expensive). There's a four series adaptation that, whilst not identical, is very good — ignore the whining fanbois om IMDB/wherever ... they don't get laid and have, therefore, nothing better to do than criticise it for not being a panel-for-panel recreation.
Sandman I'm aware of because I was enjoined to like it by a friend who was a Gaiman fan in the early '90s .. but I couldn't get into it myself.
I know of Fables, because my sister was into it — didn't appeal enough for me to read it myself, but ... 97% of the time ... I can rely on my sister's judgement, so, if she enjoyed it, there's a good chance that (even if it;s not to my taste), it's still good in the same way Sandman is good (well written and well illustrated).
Whilst I'm thinking about it ... although I didn't get into it enough to buy any of The Invisibles myself, I found the borrowed copies I read in the early '00s entertaining enough as well. Likewise The Exterminators.
I wouldn't say I were really into it as such; my own collection is limited to the first few Tank Girl collections, Transmetropolitan, The Pro and early '90s UK zines like Toxic! and Deadline ².
But, whatever the form or format, if something's good, I'll recommend it to people, in case they find it entertaining as well ☺️
