I’d like to suggest another possibility …

There are things I will buy at a discount because they fall within a budget that, whilst still not cheap, is within my means for an item I would not purchase at it’s normal price but would, nevertheless, like, if only I could afford it at its regular price.

It’s not the pleasure of obtaining a bargain … or even of it (theoretically) being of better quality … that gives me pleasure, but the fact that I am able to possess it at all.

If I see a Porsche 911 at a ‘bargain’ price I can afford, I’m buying it — no, I won’t have saved money … but I will have a Porsche 911 I was otherwise never going to possess 😀
