I have no account/subscription with the NYT, didn’t pay a penny to read the article as a one-off, wasn’t informed that it was one of my ‘x number of free articles’ … and had no trouble reading it at all — opened the link and read it, no problem.

I do, however, have a lot of blocker extensions in my browser, so the site didn’t get to run any scripts or set any cookies and, as far as it was concerned I was invisible/not even there in the first place — so that may be why and it might be worth your trying the same approach.
