DDG is probably the least worst option.
But don’t assume it’s a silver bullet.
Leaving aside the somewhat dubious matter of Names Database, consider the CLOUD Act as well.
Tthe idea that your searches will be protected from the prying eyes of various US agencies by using servers located off US soil flies out of the window; so you want to avoid anything that is registered as/to a US company (which, fundamentally means anything that is a .com as well) — the GDPR won’t help you … especially not as the CLOUD Act was formulated pretty much in response to the GDPR (the US government wanted data from Facebook, who were refusing to hand it over because it was stored on servers in Éire and, therefore protected by the GDPR).
