If you tread the right paths in this world, you can find yourself in places and in company the like of which nice, decent people never dream of even in their foulest nightmares.

Whether you choose to remain or return makes no difference … afterwards there is a darkness you can never completely eradicate from your life.

With time spent back in the light of the World, it may fade like a bruise or a burn, but never completely away; it lurks within you … a shadow of things that cannot be unseen … things that cannot be undone — a stain on your soul … if you (still) have one.

At most, in moments when your guard is down, you might let slip some hint of it ... say something, do something that betrays to the observant that there is something amiss about you in some way ... but you never, ever betray yourself sufficiently to give away more than that; you can talk about all kinds of things, tell all kinds of tales but there are some things you keep to yourself come Hell or high water — things you wouldn’t even tell a stranger on a bus … or a contemporary in a high-security facility for the criminally insane … things that make you flinch when you look in the mirror.

The below isn’t my story ¹, but it’s a good example of what I mean: its a lot more darkly disturbing than you might first give it credit for — the longer you look at it, the more you see things unsaid.

¹ I’m no angel, but there are people and things in this world in comparison to which I’m a beacon of light in the darkness.

Where Angels Fear

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live and too rare to die.
