Ah, but ... our consciousness is not necessarily the be all and end all of the phenomenon

What if I start calculating some neverending equation and an emergent property of that calculation is a consciousness of which I am ... can be ... no more aware than my own brain is of my mind?

(As an aside: the Moral Philosophy question that arises from this is ... should we become aware of the existence of said consciousness ... do I have the moral right to stop calculating the equation?)
