A couple of points: First, the 72 virgins is a mistranslation, 72 raisins would be more accurate according to some Islamic scholars. What a disappointment that must be for the martyrs.
Actually, the concept that it is a myth is itself a myth … and, furthermore, possibly even islamophobic.
But, even if it weren’t, I’d’ve still gone with it as
- it’s funnier
- it’d be really difficult to get from where I started to where I ended by way of raisins — it wasn’t exactly obvious how to get there as it was.
Second, you have done well to sidestep virgin media, virgin olive oil, however, is a good product.
Indeed : D
Granted, it would probably be very difficult to screw up olive oil, but I’m pretty sure that if anyone could … and then deliver the worst possible customer service along with it … it’d be Virgin.
If they ran a health service, you can be sure they’d amputate your left foot rather than replace your right kidney and then, when you enquired as to what they intended to do about that, send someone around to fix it … who proceeded to remove your right kidney too!
And finally, the obsession among men with marrying virgins which was widespread on the Eurasian landmass and African continent, according to what I have read about tribal cultures and early civilizations, appears to derive from a belief that when a woman has sex with a man to climax, her womb was forever ‘tainted with his seed’ thus any children she had with him were not entirely his. It’s impossible to trace the origin of this but it still persists today among some tribal groups and was common in Europe until quite recently.
Interesting — although, how much of that is the post ‘Chinese Whispers’ version of something that was, originally, something quite sensible?
I imagine that wanting to know she wasn’t a (symptomless) ‘syphilitic whore’ might well have been a major impetus too — ultimately far more significant than whether she’d previously climaxed with some other guy.
It also explains why terrorist groups like ISIS are so fond of raping females in occupied areas.
Well, amongst all the other reasons men have ever had for raping women, anyway — they’ve never really needed much excuse, have they?
